Our History
1970s
On March 29, 1973, Fenway Community Development Corporation is founded out of community activism around a lawsuit filed against the Fenway Urban Renewal Plan and the potential demolishment of housing to create parking space.
1980s
In 1984, FCDC began its first project as a sole developer at 71 Westland Ave. With its completion in 1986, the property was a 20-unit property with 16 affordable and 4 market-rate units.
1990s
FCDC completes building at 108-110 Peterborough St. in the West Fenway. The project began in 1985 and completed in 1990 as the first new-construction housing development in the neighborhood since the 1930’s. This project also included the first housing in the nation to be set aside for people with HIV/AIDS. The building at 108 Peterborough St. is home to 55 mixed-income units, while the building at 110 Peterborough St. contains units for elderly residents and accessible units.
2000s
In the early 2000s, Fenway CDC completes the renovation and purchase of apartments at 65, 66, 72-78, and 83 Westland Ave. in order to preserve affordability that was about to lapse. By 2017, FCDC purchases 31 Burbank St. with the financial assistance of the City of Boston, Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation (CEDAC), and MassHousing.
2010s
In 2017, Fenway CDC (FCDC) acquired 31 Burbank Street—now Burbank Gardens—with support from the City of Boston, CEDAC, and MassHousing. This 52-unit mixed-income building in the heart of the Fenway offers studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments and plays a key role in keeping housing affordable in a rapidly changing neighborhood. By preserving this property, FCDC is helping ensure residents can continue to live and thrive in the community.
Today
Fenway Forward continues to preserve affordable housing in the Fenway community through the opening of Burbank Terrance Apartments, creating 27 new income restricted homes. As we look to the future, we have exciting opportunities at 112 Queensberry for additional affordable homes in the Fenway neighborhood and expansion to Beacon Hill for affordable homeownership opportunities.
